a short biography

Peter and Fran grew up in Saskatoon and received their High School education at City Park Collegiate. Fran went on to the University of Saskatchewan, while Peter entered Army Officers Training, graduating as 2nd Lt., RCA. With the Korean War at an end, Peter joined the Saskatoon Police Force. Fran became Credit Manager, University Hospital. They were married in 1953. A son was born, Peter Cameron Newall. The three travelled extensively, including a seven week Sea Voyage around the world on a British Cruise Ship, the ’’Oronsay.’’

Being rather adventurous, they sold their home in Saskatoon, (which they had personally built), and headed for Vancouver Island. They purchased 20 Acres on what is known as “The Malahat” and created a Campground. Son Cameron, having finished school, left the nest and continued travelling. Peter and Fran also had Day Jobs to compliment the rather costly efforts in finishing the Campground, while Peter’s mom, “Nana”, held the fort during the day. Fran was Payroll Supervisor at Sears in Victoria, while Peter was a Drivers Examiner for the Provincial Govt. in Duncan.

Another change was in order and they headed to Atlin B.C. where Peter was the Government Agent and Fran his Deputy. Peter had a total of 26 departments for the Provincial Govt. including Magistrate, Coroner, Gold Commissioner, etc, etc.

Once again a change was made and they went to England to have a Sailboat built, a 30ft Catamaran. While waiting for the boat to be finished, they journeyed overland in a small motor-home to the Middle East and on to Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they met up with son Cameron. He had established a clothing factory in Kabul, with 27 Afghan ladies producing clothing for the US and Canada.

Back in England, they took the boat to the Mediterranean through the French Canals and Charter Sailed out of Spain for about a year and a half. They sold the boat and continued to travel in Europe, finally coming back to Canada.

A new challenge presented itself when they formed a Woodworking company in North Vancouver. In the eighth year, an opportunity to sell came. Off to Mexico to visit friends, where an opportunity to purchase a small house arose in a Spanish speaking sub-division. It was obvious that learning Spanish was necessary to survive the daily routine.  Four years in Mexico was pleasant but not too challenging.

They returned to Canada and ventured back to the North where they purchased a 40ft. Houseboat and did Sightseeing Charters on beautiful Atlin Lake.” ATLIN LAKE HOUSEBOAT TOURS Ltd.”  Weather patterns have made a rather large change in the summers in the North and so clients were not engaging their services enough to make it worthwhile. Another company has purchased their boat and should do quite well with a “Bareboat” offering.

Their son, Cameron, passed away in 1994, leaving 2 Granddaughters.
